The founding house of Cooperative Roots was obtained by a collection of fomer members of the University Students Cooperative Association. Through contacts with the Seventh Generation Land Trust, a 3-story residence was located in South Berkeley. The house is located across the street from Malcom X Elementary School, where house members perform volunteer yard duty.

Through negotiations with the owner, agreement has been reached to purchase the property, pending renovations to make the house habitable for a larger number of occupants. Setting up camp on the lawn, residents quickly began working on the house. Currently, they are incorporating sustainable building practices and keeping costs low by using their own labor and acquiring free or salvaged materials.

House Council meetings are run by consensus and occur on Mondays at 8:00pm.
